About Susan
Susan Hamilton is a self-taught mixed media artist whose work explores the fusion of texture, color, and classic elegance.
Her pieces are a vibrant interplay of acrylic paint on canvas, delicate chinoiserie patterns, and handcrafted polymer clay flowers. Regardless of the medium, each element of Susan’s work is thoughtfully layered to create depth and dimension.
Susan's work balances boldness with intricacy: each flower is sculpted by hand, each brushstroke is thoughtfully placed. Her work invites the viewer into a world where tradition meets tactile innovation, and where stories unfold through detail and ornamentation.
Driven by intuition and a deep appreciation for the decorative arts, Susan continues to push the boundaries of mixed media, creating unique pieces that feel both timeless and deeply personal.
Susan lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. When she isn’t in her studio, she can be found working in her garden, curled up with a good book, or chasing after her two busy grandchildren.
Susan’s Process
Susan’s pieces are fully custom and tailor-made to ensure your designs are uniquely yours: meaningful and beautiful.
Susan begins by working with you to determine the size of the piece - will it be wall-hung or designed for tabletop display? Once you align on scale, you’ll provide Susan input on your desired color palatte and, most importantly, your favorite blossom or blossoms that will be featured in your piece. Your favorite flower will often inspire the design of your overall piece, influencing both the choice of blossoms and the overall aesthetic of the design.
Susan will provide you with sketches to confirm the art direction of the piece. When you’re ready, she’ll begin production according to your specifications. Once the clay fabrication is complete, Susan will craft the piece’s base and mount each of the blossoms before enveloping the piece in a cascading layer of liquid resin. Your piece is then covered to rest as it cures in a dust-free environment, allowing it to set without interference.
When your piece is complete, Susan will carefully package your heirloom and work with you to finalize shipping. Your piece will be carefully and meticulously prepared for its final journey, wrapped carefully to ensure no damage occurs in transit.
The finished piece that arrives to your doorstep will be more than just decor: it will be a cherished accessory in your home, created with care and collaboration.
